Microsoft has officially confirmed that support for Windows 10 will come to an end on October 14, 2025, marking a significant transition point for millions of users and organizations worldwide. Originally launched in July 2015, Windows 10 has served as one of Microsoft’s most widely adopted operating systems, but it will no longer receive updates, patches, or technical support after the specified date.
As of 2024, Windows 10 remains the dominant OS in many enterprise and government environments, but the approaching end-of-life means that continued use will pose increasing security risks due to the absence of security updates.
Although the operating system will still function after the support deadline, Microsoft strongly advises users to begin planning their migration strategies. Without regular updates, systems running Windows 10 will become vulnerable to malware, ransomware, and other cybersecurity threats. Microsoft also notes that some applications and services may gradually become incompatible with Windows 10 over time.
To ease the transition, Microsoft has announced that Microsoft 365 apps will continue to receive updates on Windows 10 until October 14, 2028, giving organizations more flexibility in planning. Additionally, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for customers who need more time to upgrade. These ESUs will provide critical security patches beyond the 2025 deadline, although they will come at a cost and are typically geared toward enterprise clients.
Users are encouraged to consider upgrading to Windows 11, the current supported version of Microsoft’s desktop OS. However, not all devices running Windows 10 will meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, which include TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and newer processor specifications. In such cases, purchasing a new device that supports Windows 11 may be necessary.
With just over a year left before the end of support, Microsoft recommends that individuals, schools, and businesses begin assessing their options to avoid being caught unprepared.
