In a significant move to bolster Africa’s digital economy, Microsoft has announced an investment of 5.4 billion rand (approximately $296.81 million) to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in South Africa by the end of 2027. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for Microsoft’s Azure services across the region.

The investment will focus on constructing additional data centers equipped with advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) to handle AI workloads. This development builds upon Microsoft’s previous commitment of 20.4 billion rand over the past three years, which established South Africa’s first enterprise-grade data centers in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

In addition to infrastructure development, Microsoft is prioritizing digital skills advancement. The company will sponsor technical certification exams for 50,000 individuals over the next year, covering high-demand fields such as cloud architecture, AI, and cybersecurity. This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to train one million South Africans in AI and related skills by 2026.

President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the investment, describing it as a “vote of confidence” in South Africa’s economy. He emphasized that the commitment aligns with the country’s priorities as it prepares to host the G20 Summit later this year, focusing on using AI for sustainable development.

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, highlighted the strategic importance of South Africa in the company’s global AI expansion plans. He noted that the investment reflects Microsoft’s dedication to equipping South Africans with the technological tools necessary for prosperity and skill development.

This substantial investment underscores Microsoft’s long-term commitment to South Africa, aiming to foster innovation, reduce youth unemployment, and drive inclusive economic growth across the continent.
